Ventura Cigar’s PSyKo Seven

IMG_8394I was fortunate enough to get my hands on a two pack of the PSyKo Seven cigars from Ventura Instagram a week or so ago and had been anxious to try them. From what I had been hearing about them through other people and between what I had heard and the packaging (I’m a sucker for clever packaging) I wanted to see what they were all about.

The two pack arrived to me in the small wooden box with a Boveda pack in the bottom, which kept the humidity level in an excellent range. The cigar was still firm but easily pliable between the fingers. The cigars could easily be squeezed without the fear of cracking the wrapper yet, there were no noticeable dead or empty spots throughout the body of the stick.

The Maduro wrapper of this cigar is a nice rich brown nearly matching the color of coffee beans. The veining is minimal and the seam is almost invisible. The smell of the body is a bit of hay, earth, nuts, fruit and of course cedar. The foot reveals the same notes only stronger.

The light is easy and the draw was firm but not difficult and the cigar produced plenty of smoke from each pull. The smoke was not what I would call heavy on the tongue but still dense and full. From lighting it burned evenly and held a good solid ash. The flavor from the parade of tobacco used to make this cigar was excellent. While it shared a lot of the same flavors as it did in odor the nuttiness and fruit/citrus notes were more noticeable along with a spiciness. As I work my way through the cigar the flavor stays fairly even with little change. However, the flavor does become fuller putting this well into what I would consider to be a good medium to nearly full body cigar.

I thoroughly enjoyed smoking these cigars and can’t wait to pick up some more. If you are looking for something that has complex flavors and isn’t going to kill your budget look no further than the PSyKo Seven from Ventura Cigars. At $7.00 a stick it is really a cigar to beat in both price and quality.

A Happy Healthier Beard

image3-3So we received a sample of Gentleman Jim’s Beard Oil at DR HQ and the duty to give this stuff a test run fell to me since I have the largest beard at DR HQ and I also didn’t currently use any beard oils, so it would be a true test.

I don’t know about everyone else, but my beard is exposed to some serious elements like heat, sweat, dust/dirt, grease, industrial and man-made gases (that was a fart joke) just to name a few. I have also even singed my beard hair with a cigar lighter or 2 when I’ve had a few too many. Honestly I used to only shampoo and condition my beard and that was it, but I have been looking to do some kind of beard oil treatment to take care of my beard more.

So I started a several week test of the beard oil, I applied after I washed and cleaned my beard. I applied about nickel sized puddle of oil in the palm of my hand, and rubbed it into my beard trying to coat my beard with an even film. The more and more I used the oil, the more I noticed my beard hair was softer, less curly, didn’t turn into a huge rats nest as much and was overall more manageable throughout the day. Like I said I had never used a beard oils or products before so this was a huge step forward for me, no more combs with broken teeth or tangles that almost made me cry, it was like a gift from above but it was just really a gift from Spring, Texas.

Gentleman Jim’s Beard Oil is made in the USA and made of all natural oils, the style I had was Texasimage2-2 Tea, and the smell is strong but has great earthy smell that I liked. He also makes an unscented if you don’t want any smell or your significant others nose isn’t into strong manly smells. Bottles are available in 1oz. and 2oz sizes and can be purchased from there Etsy.com store front and they are willing to ship worldwide so even our International Ruffians can get in on this wonderful stuff. I honestly couldn’t be happier with my end result; I even ordered a 2oz bottle personally so I could continue keeping my beard happy and healthy. Like I always say if you can buy from a small business please do so, it helps out everyday people not just a stock price. Thanks for giving us the opportunity to test out this product guys!

McClelland Tobacco Company’s Beacon

Beacon1I bought a tin of beacon on a recommendation from @themanredbeard. I have been looking to try more Virginia blends since I am mostly an English blend smoker. Upon opening the tin my nose was met with this smell of ketchup and vinegar (this is a common thing with McClelland Beacon2Virginias). I was worried that that I wouldn’t like this tobacco based on the smell. Let me tell you something do not ignore this blend because of the smell.

Beacon3As I packed the first bowl, I used my Peterson XL12 with a P-Lip stem (I rubbed the flake out and then gravity filled the pipe); after it was filled I started with a false light, when I lit the pipe I was greeted with a sweet sugary taste, slightly tangy like a BBQ sauce. I then proceeded and lit the pipe; man I just knew this was going to be a great smoke. The baccy stayed sweet and smoked very cool all the way to the half way point. When I hit the halfway point the flavor profile shifted some and was now a sweet lemony hay taste. To say the least it was glorious. There was some spice from the perique but it was a nice light spice not too hard on the mouth.

Beacon4Judah said this blend will make your mouth water and at the half way point it did just that I couldn’t stop it was just so good. There was no tongue bite for me. As I came upon the end the spice disappeared and it was full on Virginias it was amazing. There was a small amount of bite at the very end but I think that was because my cadence picked up and I was puffing a little quicker than I usually do.

All in all I smoked half a tin over the weekend and I am now a lover of this blend. I will say if you are a fast smoker you may burn your tongue. I did notice on the third bowl it was a little bitey for me but it was still enjoyable
